The journey of the Holy Family began with the Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary in the town of Nazareth. The angel told her that she had been chosen by God to conceive and bear a son, who would be called Jesus, the Son of the Most High (Luke 1:26-38). Although initially troubled by this messag. Mary humbly accepted God’s plan with faith and obedience, saying, “Let it be to me according to your word.”
At the same time, Joseph, Mary’s betrothed, was also visited by an angel in a dream. The angel reassured him that Mary’s pregnancy was by the power of the Holy Spirit and encouraged him to take Mary as his wife (Matthew 1:20-21). Joseph, a righteous and faithful man, obeyed without hesitation, embracing his role as the earthly guardian of Jesus.

A decree from Caesar Augustus required all citizens to return to their ancestral towns for a census. Because Joseph was of the lineage of David, he and Mary had to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, a journey of about 90 miles (Luke 2:1-5). The journey was arduous, especially for Mary, who was in the late stages of pregnancy.
Upon arriving in Bethlehem, they found the city overcrowded due to the census. With no room available at the inn, they sought shelter in a humble stable, where Mary gave birth to Jesus and laid Him in a manger (Luke 2:6-7). This moment fulfilled the prophecy from Micah 5:2, which foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.
The birth of Jesus was accompanied by miraculous signs. An angel appeared to shepherds in the fields, announcing the good news of the Savior’s birth. A heavenly host then praised God, proclaiming, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men” (Luke 2:8-14). The shepherds immediately went to see the baby and, upon finding Him, spread the word about what they had witnessed.
Sometime later, wise men (Magi) from the East arrived in Jerusalem, seeking the newborn King of the Jews. They had followed a mysterious star that led them to Bethlehem. Upon finding Jesus, they presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, each symbolizing aspects of His divine mission gold for kingship. Frankincense for deity, and myrrh as a foreshadowing of His sacrificial death (Matthew 2:1-12).
King Herod the Great, upon hearing of Jesus’ birth, saw Him as a threat to his throne. He order the massacre of all male infants in Bethlehem under the age of two. An event known as the Massacre of the Innocents (Matthew 2:16-18). However, God intervened by sending an angel to warn Joseph in a dream, instructing him to flee to Egypt with Mary and Jesus (Matthew 2:13-15). They remained there until Herod’s death, ensuring Jesus’ safety.
After Herod’s death, an angel once again appeared to Joseph, directing him to return to Israel. However, learning that Herod’s son, Archelaus, ruled in Judea, Joseph decided to settle in Nazareth. Fulfilling the prophecy that Jesus would be called a Nazarene (Matthew 2:19-23). Nazareth became the home where Jesus would grow in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and men (Luke 2:52).

The early life of Jesus was filled with divine guidance, protection, and fulfillment of prophecy. His humble birth in a stable rather than a palace, His family’s hardships and obedience to God. And the miraculous events surrounding His arrival all pointed to His divine nature and mission.
